The parish of St Joseph lies on the eastern side of the island nation of Barbados and occupies an area of 26 square kilometers.
The landscape is mostly rocky with remote, wide stretches of beach. The climate is tropical and sunny, cooled by the trade winds off the Atlantic Ocean.
The parish has a population of about 7,500 people and consists mainly of the descendants of the African slaves that were brought by the British to work in the plantations in the seventeenth century. Other ethnic groups include descendants of the Arawaks, Caribs, Spanish, Portuguese and Celtic settlers.
