This beautiful island chain is one of the prettiest sights in the Bahamas. The emerald and jade colours of the water make a striking contrast to the bright white sand of the beaches.
Georgetown, the capital of the Exumas, is located on Great Exuma. Here you will find the Club Peace and Plenty Hotel, and St Andrew’s Anglican Church, the oldest church in Exuma. Georgetown hosts the annual Bahamian Music and Heritage Festival every March, and the National Family Island Regatta, which takes place in April. It is also worth taking a trip to the Straw Market, where local products can be bought, and the restaurants along Lake Victoria, where fresh conch and other local produce are the specialty.
The Exumas are scattered with quaint little towns, well worth a visit. Rolleville
was once the island’s largest slave settlement, and also the site of several
uprisings in the 1820s and ‘30s. Rolle Town is situated on the harbour
side of the island, and boasts breathtaking views over the harbour towards Georgetown.
Williams Town, Little Exuma’s southernmost settlement, is known for its
salt pond. Built on the site of a former cotton plantation, this town of 300
people boasts two churches, one of which, St Mary Magdalene, houses stained
glass windows that depict scenes from the National Family Island Regatta.
