Andros is actually composed of three landmasses joined by deep swamplands,
in which more than 50 species of orchids can be found. There are over 200 native
bird species, and more than 104 square kilometres of rainforest. Wild boar and
four-foot long iguanas also call this island home. Andros’ natural beauty
has, fortunately, been preserved, as the interior has been largely untouched
by commercial development.
The Andros Lighthouse, built in 1892, marks the southern entrance to Fresh
Creek Channel. A tower was added and three old cannons relocated to the front
of the lighthouse in 1952. The island is scattered with old plantation buildings,
many of which can be visited. Two examples are the Whyms Plantation in Blanket
Sound, a ruin from the late 1800s, and the Chamberlain Sisal Plantation in the
Love Hill settlement.
The famous pirate, Captain Morgan, is said to have hidden treasure on Andros.
One of the supposed hiding places is Captain Morgan’s Cave in Morgan Bluff,
on the north of the island. Near Pleasant Harbour, eight stone buildings, built
in the 1930s but never inhabited, give a perfect example of old Bahamian architecture.
In Congo Town, southern Andros, Star Gate Blue Hole is well worth a visit, famous
for the 1990s discovery of Indian skulls.
