Eleuthera’s attractions include the Glass Window Bridge, Hatchet Bay
caves, and Ocean Hole, a depression in the seabed over 100 fathoms deep. Surfers
can enjoy the waves, sun and sand at Surfer’s Beach in the north, while
visitors searching for a relaxing holiday can sunbathe on the many pink-sand
beaches. Some of the best diving in the region can be enjoyed off the coast,
especially in the shipwrecks and Ocean Hole. Swimming and snorkelling are also
popular, either on the beaches or in the many sheltered coves.
One of the island’s main crops is the pineapple, and an annual Pineapple
Festival in Gregory Town is a perfect opportunity to taste the rich flavour
of the local product. Trips through the sleepy colonial villages afford a perfect
opportunity to enjoy the friendly attitudes of locals. The sun-drenched pineapple
plantations and bright colours are a perfect backdrop for a bit of escapism.
Harbour Island’s only settlement, Dunmore Town, is one of the oldest
in the Bahamas, founded when the Loyalist Governor of Virginia fled to these
islands and was awarded the title of Lord Dunmore. This former shipyard and
sugar refinement centre today boasts what have been called the best beaches
in the world, with fine pink sand making a striking contrast to the aqua blues
of the ocean.
