Tourist Guide St Philip
The parish of St Philip is located on the south-eastern part of the country of Barbados and covers an area of about 60 square kilometres. In terms of land area, this is one of the largest parishes in Barbados.
The topography of the area is relatively flat as compared to the rest of the island, and consists mainly of low-lying areas close to sea level. The climate is sunny and tropical, with the cooling effect of the trade winds.
St Philip has a population of about 20,500 people. Most of the populace has descended from the African slaves, who were brought here by the British in the seventeenth century. Some inhabitants also trace their lineage back to the Arawaks, Caribs, Spanish, Portuguese and English.
The society and culture of this region has been heavily influenced by the years of English rule in this area.
