Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve

The Bacalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve is located in the northern region of Ambergris Caye. Here one can find sea grass, reef, mangrove and a littoral forest. At this place, the Mayan traders had dug a channel 1500 years ago to separate the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and Ambergris Caye.

Here one can observe various bird species, crocodiles, turtles and manatees. The Rocky point in this park has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is the only place on the globe where land meets reef.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is the most famous diving and snorkeling site in Belize. In Mayan language, the translation of Hol Chan is “little cut.” There is a cut in the reef that has coral lined and steep walls at a depth of 9.5 meters. This reserve is spread over an area of 8 square kilometers which is comprised of mangroves, sea grass beds and coral formations.

One more attraction of this place is the Cat’s Eye which is a sinkhole shaped like a crescent. It is possible to see various corals, crustaceans and fish which include species like brain coral, finger, spiny lobster, spadefish, eels and black groupers. This reserve is frequently crowded.
