Amerindians followed by the Mayans were the first to inhabit the region which is now Belize. European settlement began only by the mid-seventeenth century, and the country was reduced to a colony of Britain. Belize became independent on 21 September 1981. However, there are still several disputes between Guatemala and Belize with the former claiming the control of the latter and not recognizing it as a nation.
One can find a wide diversity in the culture of this country owing to people of various ethnicities residing in Belize. The local forms of dance and music are very interesting and bring the unique diversity of its culture to the front. The Belizeans have their own very special ways of celebrating their festivals which would interest a foreigner.
Belize is a small nation located between Guatemala and Mexico, bordering the Caribbean Sea. Its terrain is basically flat with swampy coastal plains and a few low hills in the southern region. It is a picturesque place with lovely beaches, plenty of vegetation, great wildlife, etc. Victoria Peak is the highest point of elevation in the country.
