San Ignacio exists on the banks of the Mopan River and Macal River. It is a town in Western Belize. It is the capital of the Cayo district. It contains a population mix of Kriol and Mestizo communities largely and some Mopan and a few Lebanese. It also contains sizeable inhabitants of Chinese community. 2000 census estimated the population strength to be 16,400. The town was the center of wood and gum industries. When both these industries died out, tourism became a main business here. Agriculture and farming also were done by the people. Burns Avenue is the name of the main street in San Ignacio. It is a very busy street with many people walking around all the time and is filled with restaurants, wooden shops, bars, hotels and dining outlets. Saturday is the market day in San Ignacio. One can buy anything from bananas, vegetables, fruits, utensils avocados and other tropical products. The city has one educational institution called Sacred Heart College.
