All of the Parishes in this eastern part of Bermuda have interesting sights
and attractions for the visitor. In Hamilton Parish, journey into the strange
world of the limestone caves, such as the Crystal Caves, the Grotto Bay Hotel’s
Cathedral, and Prospero’s Caves. John Smith’s Bay and Park in Smith’s
Parish is a popular spot for relaxing on the beach. There are also a number
of inviting restaurants nearby.
Further east, the historic town of St George’s is a great place to gain
an insight into Bermuda’s history. Founded in 1612, this was Bermuda’s
first capital city, and the buildings constructed from the 17th to 19th centuries
remain largely intact. King’s Square in central St George’s includes
a replica of a dunking stool, where gossiping women used to be punished by being
dumped in the water. Bermuda’s oldest building, the Old State House, is
also built here. This 1620 building was the country’s original government
building.
