The province of Cartago is located in the central part of the country of Costa Rica and covers an area of 3,125 square kilometres.
The topography of the area is varied. The major topographical features include the Pacuare and Reventazon rivers, the Irazu and Turrialba volcanoes and the Cachi Lagoon. The province is at a higher altitude than the rest of the country and hence has a cooler climate. The average temperatures range from 20°C to 24°C.
The province has a population of about 432,395 people. The majority of the people are of Spanish origin and there are also those of mixed Mestizo lineage. There are also people of Italian, German, English, Dutch, French, Portuguese, Polish and Chinese descent. Another small but significant ethnic group is that of the Afro-Costa Ricans.
