Hernán Ponce de León is the person who discovered the Puntarenas city in the year 1519. Hernán Ponce de León was on an expedition to find a new city which had a different settlement than the other cities in Central America. His search ended when he reached Puntarenas. Puntarenas was not known to the outside world till the year 1845. After this year the production of coffee in the city increased so much that they had to export it outside the city. This export of coffee brought Puntarenas in the limelight. The port of Puntarenas is made Duty Free by the American government for the trading of coffee and liquor. Puntarenas lies on the western coast of Central America. Puntarenas has many attractive natural features and many beautiful sceneries and landscapes which are worth watching. The temperature of the city is quite variable. The summers here are hot and humid and winters are a lot cooler. The total area of the city is around 3.9 square miles and the population in the year 2000 was 102,504.
