The San José Central Market is probably Costa’s Rica’s most authentic market. It is located between Avenidas Central/1 and Calles 6/8 and features more than 350 stalls selling everything possible, from hammocks and fish to flowers and spices.
Visitors can find baskets, vegetables, meat and souvenirs at the market. The market also has separate stalls selling fish such as Dorado, shrimp and octopus; saddle shops; flower shops and booths that sell medicinal herbs. Prices are quite good and the visitors can easily wander through the market and get the best bargains.
Just outside the market, there is a coffee roasting/grinding shop where tourists can enjoy fabulous freashly ground Costa Rican coffee. The market is not as huge as some Central American markets, but is surely worth visiting.
