Safety and Warnings

Being vigilant and cautious will help, especially at the Pueblo, as fights that occur at times can get violent.
It is advised not to stroll around in the warren alleys of the complex.
Taxis around the main entrance tend to charge steep rates. 2000 colones is considered as the normal fare into downtown.
Walk to the main street and negotiate before you take a taxi from there on a meter basis.
Be careful of your wallet and it is best not to flaunt cash, jewelry and expensive or shiny watches.
Walking alone late at night can be very dangerous and can also increase the chances of getting robbed.
Anything expensive and precious should be left at your accommodation or in your hotel safe when going downtown, as many aggressive pickpockets are on the prowl.
At the airport too, it is safe not to lose sight of your luggage and keep a close watch while your luggage is being loaded on and off a taxi as porters are known to be liable to take things out of it.
