The official name of Baracoa is Municipio Baracoa and its historical name is Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Baracoa. As per the 2002 census the total population of the town was 81,256.
The average temperature of the place ranges from 25-28 degree centigrade and the annual rainfall is 1600 mm. around the year the place has high humidity. The total area of the town is 977 sq Km.
The municipality of Baracoa lies in the extreme east of Cuba in the Guantánamo Province. The city was founded in 1511 by the Spanish conqueror Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar. The town is the oldest Spanish settlement in Cube also the first capital of the Spaniards. It was given a Nick name of Ciudad Primada, "First City". It is the place where Christopher Columbus landed in his first voyage to Cuba. The city of Baracosa is bordered by wide mountain ranges and lies near the Bay of Honey.
