Cienfuegos is a major sea port and the capital of the province of Cienfuegos on the southern coast of Cuba, Central America. The city has a population of approximately 150,000 inhabitants.
The city has a warm tropical climate throughout the year. The climate is constantly moderated by the trade winds and the best time to visit the city is from November to April.
The area, initially occupied by the indigenous people, was taken over by French immigrants from Bordeaux and Louisiana, in 1840. The city became a town in 1880 and was subsequently reamed Cienfuegos, after a Spanish governor by the same name.
The city has been inscribed by UNESCO on the World Heritage List as the best existing example of the nineteenth century early Spanish Enlightenment Implementation in urban planning.
