Tourist Guide Gauntanamo
The city of Gauntanamo, capital of the province with the same name is situated in south-east Cuba. Gauntanamo overlies the Sierra Maestra Mountains in the north and borders the Caribbean Sea in the south. The city has a population of around 200,000 inhabitants.
Gauntanamo is characterised by a mild tropical climate, and it stays warm and sunny almost all round the year. The northern region receives more rainfall whereas the southern coast is hot and arid.
Guantanoma became famous during the Spanish American War. In 1901, the US Government chose Guantanoma Bay as the site for their naval station and leased it from the Cuban Government.
The economy of the region is sustained primarily through the production of sugarcane and cotton. Guantanamo exhibits French and other indigenous influences in its culture and architecture.
