The region is an absolute haven for nature lovers and ecotourists as it provides them with ample opportunity to experience and enjoy the numerous specialties of nature tourism. The Zapata Swamp is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and is the shelter of almost 150 species of rare birds. It is also the largest breeding farm of the Cuban crocodile in the Caribbean. The swamp is also home to Manatee, a prehistoric fish.
The Montemar Great Natural Park has beaches, lush vegetation as well as caves and is an ideal destination to enjoy scuba-diving and bird watching. The park also offers hiking, horseback riding and boating. At the International Bird Watching Centre, tourists can absorb nature, surrounded by warm sand, crystalline waters and corals.
