Pinar del Rio, capital of the province with same name, is situated in western Cuba. The city is made up mountains and valleys, surrounded by lovely white beaches. The city has a total population of around 150,000 inhabitants.
This area has an ideal tropical climate. It is pleasantly warm, and the average temperature stays around 25°C throughout the year.
Pinar del Rio was founded in 1774 by a Spanish general captain; it acquired its definitive name by 1778. The region played a crucial role in the Last War for National Independence.
The inhabitants of Pinar del Rio are known as Pinareños. The city is renowned for growing the finest black tobacco and is the centre of the cigar industry.
