Santiago de Cuba Historic Sites: Castillo del Morro

Castillo del Morro

Thanks to Disney, Caribbean pirates are wildly popular today. That was not the case in the 1630s, when Santiago de Cuba's governor commissioned Milanese architect Giovanni Battista Antonelli to build the fortress known as Castillo del Morro.

Guarding the Bay of Santiago about 10 miles south of the city center, the massive fortress wasn't very good at keeping pirates away, but the bay was the site of many historically important battles and the citadel offers both splendid views and a window into Cuba's past.

The scene is best taken in early in the morning or in the evening to avoid the scorching midday heat.  The daily sunset ceremony of Puesta del Sol commemorates Cuba's liberation from Spanish rule. Deservedly so, Castillo del Morro has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
