Santiago de Cuba: Attractions and more...
Santiago de Cuba has a number of museums and sights relevant to the Cuban Revolution, making this a must-see for those interested in 20th century history. The Moncada barracks, where Castro and the rebels made their first attack on Batista, is open to the public, and there is the Museo de la Lucha Clandestina nearby, which describes the underground opposition to Batista. The Plaza de la Revolucion and Plaza de Marte both commemorate the revolution, while the Cementerio Santa Ifigenia contains the tombs of José Marti and Emilio Bacardi, along with graves of those who fought during the revolution.
Other interesting sights include the Casa de Diego Velazquez with its collection of colonial furniture; the Catedral de San Juan de Santiago; the Museo Municipal Bacardi, containing Emilio Bacardi’s private collection of art and antiques; and the original Bacardi Rum Factory. The Balcon de Velazquez looks out over the magnificent harbour of Santiago, while at the rooftop bar of the Hotel Santiago de Cuba you can take a refreshing drink accompanied by a spectacular view of the city.
The area around the city offers a number of attractions as well, from La Basilica
de Nuestra Senora del Cobre, Cuba’s pilgrimage site, to the Castillo de
San Pedro del Morro, a coastal castle on a hill built to protect the harbour
from pirates. The Castillo houses a pirate museum, as well as offering magnificent
views over the harbour and the surrounding countryside.
