The Arawak people were the original inhabitants of this island who were expelled from the region by the Caribs. On 3 November 1493, Christopher Columbus arrived at the island with his crew but had to retreat soon due to the Caribs. England and France were also defeated at their attempts to capture the island in 1627 and 1635, respectively. The United Kingdom however succeeded in making it a colony in 1805. Dominica finally won its independence in 1978 and was incorporated as a nation.
There are numerous different forms of dance, music and art in the country because of the diversity in the population. However, Bachata is the local traditional form of music and dance in Dominica. Other popular forms of music include calypso, soca, zouk and rock and roll. Locally made baskets are a must-buy.
