Bahoruco’s two main towns offer limited resources to the visitor. The
main river in the province, the Yaque del Sur, serves as Bahoruco’s western
border. The river feeds into Lake Enriquillo, the major attraction in this area.
Neiba’s tourism potential is only now beginning to be developed, but its
proximity to Lake Enriquillo makes it an attractive starting-point for a visit
to this province. Tamayo’s position on the Yaque del Sur river also makes
it a good starting-point for excursions into the countryside. Local produce
from the nearby farms is easily available in these towns.
In the north of Bahoruco, the Sierra de Bahoruco is a haven for the country’s
flora and fauna. Over 52% of the country’s orchids are found here, including
3 species found only in this area. The Sierra de Bahoruco also contains areas
of different types of forest scattered through its mountains, ranging from pine
forests to tropical rainforests. These forests are home to 49 species of birds,
and a huge variety of reptiles and amphibians, making this nature reserve one
of the Dominican Republic’s best-preserved tracts of the natural environment.
