San Pedro de Macorís: Attractions and more...
San Pedro de Macorís city is an old port city on the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. It is the home of the Universidad Central del Este. One of the province’s major rivers, the Higuamo, runs through the city. This centre of the Dominican sugar industry is also a major producer of liquor, and both of these local products can be sampled on a visit to the city.
The surrounding countryside of the San Pedro de Macorís province is
mostly formed by savannahs, which are fringed on the coast by beautiful beaches.
One of the smaller towns worth visiting is San José de los Llanos, located
in the Guabatico Savannahs. During the first decades of it existence, 12 cattle
ranches stretched out across the Guabatico plain, and today, visits to the extensive
ranches allow tourists to gain an insight into the agricultural activities that
have sustained the region since its settlement.
