Chalatenango is situated in the northwest of Salvador country. It is a department and capital city of Salvador. Chalatenango occupies nearly 2017 kilometers and the population of this place is approximately 220000. It was recognized as a department in the year 1855. Originally, the place was an Indian settlement administered by the Spanish colonial governor Caradalet. An Agricultural fair is held annually by the city which is its national event. The chiefly produced products of this city include coffee, orchard plants, vegetables, grains and henequen. The growth and expansion of Chalatenango is due to rope making, pottery and indigo processing. The city faced many damages when a clash occurred between the leftist guerillas and the government troops in the early 1980’s.
