Sonsonate is the capital city of the department of Sonsonate, EI Salvador. It lies on the banks of the Sensunappan River and is at a distance of 21 kilometer from the San Salvodar railway to the pacific port of Acajutla. As per the population census of 2006, the total population of the city is calculated at 110,501. Department of Sonsonate was created on 12th June 1824. Sonsonate city was the second capital of the Federal Republic of Central America in the year 1834.The city was the heart of a rich agricultural district and also one of the busiest and active manufacturing towns of the republic. The city produces pottery, cotton cloths, boots and shoes, mats and baskets, starch, sugar, spirits and cigars. The city through Acajutla exported sugar and coffee and imported grain to distribute to all parts of the country. The city is home for several beautiful and attractive events during the food festival which is the main attraction of the city.
