Chichicastenango: Attractions and more...

This area receives plenty of visitors who are intrigued by the ancient Mayan civilization and wish to learn more about it. It is also an excellent place to shop for local Mayan handicraft.

Thursdays and Sundays are market days in Chichicastenango. This famous market has vendors from all over Guatemala, including the Quiche Maya. The market is a riot of colours, dialects, costumes, smoke, and smells. Vendors display local handicrafts such as textiles, wooden masks and carvings, leather goods, silver jewellery and incense sticks.

The two churches of Santo Tomas and El Calvario are also major tourist attractions. Santo Tomas is more than four hundred years old and reflects the fusion of Mayan and Catholic beliefs that is dominant in the area. El Calvario is slightly smaller and more like a chapel.

The Pottery Museum provides visitors with a glimpse of the traditions and culture of this ancient civilization.
