Peten has lot to offer visitors. In addition to being a major tourist hub, it is also has many archaeological sites and wildlife reserves. Visitors can also enjoy living in close proximity to nature in the many jungle lodges that are available here.
The National Park of Tikal covers an area of more than 570 square kilometres and is a major tourist attraction. It contains many important buildings dating back to the Mayan Civilization. Some of the more important buildings are the Great Jaguar Temple, the palaces of the Central Acropolis and the Temple of the Masks.
The Great Pyramid is another Mayan monument that awes visitors with its breathtaking dimensions.
Nature lovers should head to the Laguna del Tigre which is the largest national park of Central America. This area of lush vegetation is home to rare species such as the Xavier stork and the Scarlet macaw.
The capital city of Flores is a good place to kick-start your adventures in Peten.
