Tourist Guide Chichicastenango
The town of Chichicastenango is located in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. It is about 90 kilometres northwest of Guatemala City.
The town is situated at an altitude of 1,965 metres on the crests of the mountain tops. Due to its high altitude, the temperature here is cool round the year, varying between 11° C to 26° C.
The population of the area is about 56,000 including those of the surrounding villages. A large part of the population consists of the descendants of the ancient Mayans.
The culture of this area is a very unique blend of Mayan and Catholic traditions. It is characterised by elaborate religious rituals and unique indigenous handicraft in bright colours.
