A few things to be aware of when in Guatemala City.
The level of crime against foreigners has increased over the years and so
visitors must be vigilant and careful to travel in groups and in broad daylight
only.
The judicial system is weak and there have been violent assaults even in broad daylight. Kidnapping, bank robberies
and gang robberies are common. Purse
snatching and pickpockets are rampant in crowded localities.
Driving at night
can be risky as people often ignore stop signs, speed limits and lane markings.
Take all safety precautions about keeping your documents and valuables in the
safety box in the hotel and do not disclose your identity or address to
strangers if they try to befriend you.
It would be safer to travel by private
buses rather than public ones as assaults on buses and vans are also common.
Never carry expensive jewellery or flash it about so as to attract attention.
It is better to maintain a low profile
at all times.
