The region of Izabal is located in the eastern part of Guatemala. Lake Izabal, which is situated here, is Guatemala’s largest lake with an area of 590 square kilometres.
The topography of the area is varied with beautiful blue waters and lush green vegetation. The climate is warm with strong winds in winter.
The population of this region is approximately 328,000. A majority of the populace is of Mayan origin followed by the descendants of the African slaves.
The culture is greatly influenced by the culture of the ancient Mayas. The modern day traditions are a fusion of Mayan and Catholic traditions.
