The Petapa city comes under the jurisdiction of the Johnson County. The Interstate 25 terminal is located in the southern region of the city. From the total area of the state of Guatemala the Petapa city comprises a total area of around 9.5 square kilometers. Thus the city is not so large and is one of the smallest cities of the Guatemala state. Even though the city is small in size it is very densely populated.  When the last census was measured in the year 2000 the population of the city of Petapa was around 3,900. The city in recent times has made its name in the world market by the selling of Methane gas. The coal beds of methane have brought the city up in terms of economy. The climate of Petapa is of the semi arid type. In the summer the temperature ranges from 25 to 35 degree Celsius.
