Tourist Guide Peten
The department of Peten is located in the northern part of Guatemala. It covers an area of approximately 33,566 square kilometres.
Large parts of this area are covered with abundant vegetation with a variety of flora and fauna. Due to its ecological significance, the forests of this region have been declared a ‘Protected Area’. The climate of this region is tropical with rainfall occurring between the months of May to October.
Peten has a population of approximately 450,000 residents. Most of the population has descended from the ancient Mayas. The remaining population is made up of the descendants of the Spanish and African slaves.
Peten was the heartland of the Mayan Civilization. It has a rich and vibrant culture steeped in Mayan folklore and history.
