The town and sea port of Les Cayes is located in the south-western part of Haiti. The land is mostly mountainous and slopes gently down to the coast where there are white, sandy beaches. The climate is tropical and pleasant with a number of storms experienced between the months of June and October.
The population of Les Cayes is approximately 46,000. The majority of the populace is of African descent. Other ethnic groups include the descendants of the French and Spanish as well as Italians, Germans and Dominicans.
The culture is an exciting mixture of the all these various ethnic groups with strong French influences. The official languages are French and Creole. This unique cultural mix is especially visible in the music and cuisine of this place.
