Port Royal was a shipping centre in Jamaica notorious for the activities of pirates who displayed their wealth and loose morals in the 17th century.

It was also named the richest and most wicked city in the world.

The port was destroyed by an earthquake in 1692 and two thirds of the city sank into the Caribbean Sea. This submerged archaeological site is also known as the “City that Sank” and has several sunken pirate ships in the harbour.

Port Royal was portrayed in the Disney film series ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

Although several attempts at rebuilding the city were made, subsequent hurricanes and earthquakes destroyed the city, hampering its development.

Now the commercial role of the port has been taken over by Kingston city and there are plans to develop this small fishing town into an attractive tourist spot by including an underwater aquarium, museum and restaurant, where tourists can enjoy glimpses of local tropical sea life.
