For foreigners visiting Kingston it is safer to explore the areas, especially the downtown area, with a local guide, as poverty is widespread and poor people constantly approach visitors to sell objects.
One should avoid the downtown areas of Tivoli, Rema, Grant’s Pen or Trenchtown as they are high risk areas.
While walking around the downtown areas beware of holes in the sidewalk so as to avoid accidents.
Look left when attempting to cross roads as Jamaicans drive on the left.
Car thefts can be a problem for visitors and one must remove valuables and lock the car before buying a parking card.
To be on the safe side do not venture out of the hotel alone, especially in Kingston, and stay clear of certain areas such as the downtown area while in the city.
