Be very careful while swimming on a non-tourist beach.
The local people are well acquainted with the day-to-day dangers, but as a visitor, you have to be very cautious. For example at Runaway beach many tourists die due to carelessness.
Another thing to be careful of is Impetigo, caught from mosquito bites. It is difficult to get medical treatment in Jamaica and hospital treatment may be necessary.
Do not plan your holidays between June and October as this is the hurricane season, which not only causes physical damage, but, may also spoil your vacation. The best season to visit Jamaica is from November to May.
Just remember to carry sunscreen with you to protect yourself from exposure to the sun. The start of a day can be cloudy but then the sun comes out and sunscreen becomes a real necessity.
