Fort-de-France is the colourful capital of the island. In the centre of the town, the park of La Savanne contains the statue of Napoleon’s empress Josephine, a native of Martinique. Her home, La Pagerie, located near Trois-Îlets, is one of the main tourist attractions, with a museum commemorating her life. The Parc des Floralies, located nearby, is a peaceful botanical park.
Pointe du Bout, Le Diamant and Les Anses d’Arlets are some of the island’s best bathing spots. Diamond Rock, located off Le Diamant, is a giant seaside rock once used by the British as an armed fort. The remains of the town of St Pierre are a major attraction. The Musée Volcanologique contains exhibits, photographs and documents on the town and its destruction by Mont Pelée.
The St James Distillery at Sainte-Marie operates the Musée du Rhum. The Rhum Clement Domaine Acajou in Le François and the Fonds Saint-Jacques with its Musée du Père Labat are other popular distilleries.
