Water from the mains, while relatively safe, may cause abdominal upsets. Hence, it is advisable to consume bottled water. Milk is pasteurised and dairy products are safe for consumption. Local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables are generally considered safe to eat.
Swimming in fresh water can lead to bilharzia. Vaccinations against typhoid, hepatitis B, diphtheria and tuberculosis are recommended. Inoculation against rabies is also recommended as many cases of mongoose bites have been reported. Another common problem is sunburn; visitors are advised to use a good sun block lotion before venturing out during the day. Wearing a hat and sunglasses is highly recommended.
Martinique is a safe region, and there are no major threats to the safety of travellers. However, precautions against minor crimes like bag-snatching and pick-pocketing need to be taken.
