Jinotega is the central province of Nicaragua and is the capital city of the Jinotega department. Further more, the department of Jinotega cultivates approximately 80% of the nation’s coffee. As the central region, Jinotega is home to around fifty one thousand people. The city lies close to Apanas Lake and it is popularly called as La Ciudad de las Brumas, meaning City of Mists. The city is also a member of Zoetermeer, the Dutch city. The term Jinotega traces its origin to the Nahuatl word "Xinotencatl". The meaning of this word is subject to debate. Some believes that the word implies ‘city of the old men’, but certain other people interpret that the same bespeaks "Neighbors of the Jiñocuabos". In the history of Nicaragua, Jinotega is the ever war-torn province. Over the past seven decades Jinotega has remained as the seaport for the rebel forces. Jinotega is situated in the northern part of Nicaragua, the capital city Managua is only 160 kilometers away from the city. The climate of the city is unreliable from acute heat to significant cold.
