The department of Rivas is located in the south-western part of Nicaragua. Rivas city is also the capital of the department.
This area has a varied topography and is bordered by Lake Nicaragua on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. There are also a range of low mountains that run parallel to the coast. The climate is tropical and temperatures are generally in the mid-twenties.
The city has a population of about 28,000 people. A majority of the population is made up of the Mestizos, followed by people of European descent.
The folklore, music and religious traditions are greatly influenced by the Iberian Peninsula and are enriched with the fusion of Amerindian culture.
