The city of Ponce is also known as the ‘Pearl of the South’. This majestic city was founded in 1692 and is steeped in history.
Visitors are enchanted by the many ancient monuments and buildings. Some of the famous monuments include the beautiful Plaza de las Delicias, Parque de Bombas, the fascinating Castillo Serralles and the magnificent Casa Alcaldía.
You can learn more about the history and culture of this region at the Ponce Museum of Art and Museum of Puerto Rican Music. The Tibes Indian Ceremonial Centre is an important archaeological park with remains and antiques of the Taino Indians dating back to 300 A.D.
At the El Vigia Hill you can see a picturesque view of the mountains meeting the sea from the top of La Cruz del Vigia, a hundred foot observation tower. Visitors can also visit the Serralles distillery where the world famous Captain Morgan and Don Q brands of rum are produced.
