The town of Soufriere is located on the south-western coast of the island nation of St Lucia.
The area is largely mountainous and gently slopes down to the coast, where there are many pristine beaches. It is also known for its lush rain forests. The climate is tropical with temperatures in the mid-twenties between the months of December and May. The land is further cooled by the trade winds that blow off the coast.
Soufriere has a population of approximately 9,000 people. Most of the inhabitants are of African origin, although there are also a number of Mullatos, Indo-Caribs and Europeans.
The culture of the region is a vibrant mix of Amerindian, British and French influences. The British influence can be seen in the language and administrative system while the French influence is evident in the arts.
