Bacharach is a small village next to the Rhine, in the Loreley area, between Koblenz and Mainz. I visited it for a few days at the end of May in 2003.We stayed in an incredible youth hostel, located in the castle (Burg Stahleck) on top of the hill! It's a bit of a hike up, but definately worth it.
These are some photos of the hostel/castle. The first one is from the train station, you can see the castle in the distance. The middle two are in the courtyard of the castle. In the last one you can see the location of the castle in the Rhine valley.
Bacharach is a very old village, and really pretty. In the second photo you can see the youth hostel on top of the hill. The other building is the Werner Kappele, they call it a ruin, but it looks more like a church they never finished. Only the walls are standing!
It was Spring, and there were flowers everywhere! I had fun trying to take some macro photos of the many butterflies.
I also took night photos in Bacharach. The Werner Kappelle is very beautifully lit at night! The photos are taken in 'The Blue Hour', the hour that the sun is already gone but the sky is still blue. This makes a nice contrast with the yellow color of the church ruin! The other photos were taken in the main street of Bacharach. There are many old houses there, the oldest one is built in 1368! And there are a lot of typically German shops... dolls, dollshouses, pluche animals...
Some photos are taken with a 20mm lens, that causes the houses to bend over!
I also went for a bike ride along the Rhine. Very beautiful! When you cycle 'against the stream', you go faster than the ships :) We visited Burg Reichenstein, it's a museum. The place was full of antlers, it's a miracle there are still deer walking around there ;) In the last photo there is a skull on the table!
