Durres: Attractions and more...
Durres is as much a cultural hub as it is a tourist destination. While the city presents ample opportunity for enjoying the dazzling combination of sun and sand, its archaeological treasures offer a glimpse into the city’s rich history.
The Roman Amphitheatre is the biggest, oldest and most splendid monument in Durres. Built in the second century BC, it can accommodate 1,500 people.
The Fortress in Durres was built in the sixth century and was extended during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Its walls were once so thick that it was possible for four horsemen to trot abreast on top of them.
The Archaeological museum is situated near the sea and has an excellent collection of objects excavated from Durres. Other important buildings in Durres include the main library, the cultural centre, the Estrada Theatre and the puppet theatre.
Dining in Durres can be a delight—most of the restaurants specialize in Albanian or Italian cuisine.
