Echmiadzin is the home to one of the oldest Christian churches—the Echmiadzin Cathedral. It was originally built by St. Gregory, The Illuminator, in the early fourth century, when Armenia was the only country in the world recognizing Christianity as a state religion. An annex to the Cathedral is the Museum of Echmiadzin, which preserves highly prized paintings and religious artefacts.
Constructed in the seventh century, the Church of St. Gayane is appealing for its harmonious proportions and solemn interiors.
The magnificent Church of St. Hripsime was built on the legendary site of the martyrdom of virgin Hripsime and is a masterwork of Armenian architecture.
Barely five kilometers outside Echmiadzin are the ruins of Zvartnots, a splendid church built in the seventh century which was destroyed by an earth-quake in the tenth century.
All these sites have been listed among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
