Austria is famous for its castles, palaces and other architectural works. One of the country’s oldest cathedrals is Vienna’s gothic-styled Minoritenkirche, built in the twelfth century. The Stephansdom, at 136 m, is one of the world’s tallest cathedrals and the seat of the Archbishop of Vienna.
The Semmering Railway (the first European mountain railway on a standard-gauge track) snakes its way through the mountains that dominate most of Austria’s landscape.
The towering castles of Burg Hohenwerfen and Castle Liechtenstein are two of Austria’s most prized monuments, alongside the Belvedere Palace built in eighteenth century Baroque style. A must-visit is the breathtaking Schönbrunn Palace, which is now part of the World Cultural Heritage List.
Also on the list is the Historic Center of Graz city, famed for its Clock Tower. The Historic Centres of Salzburg city and Vienna Old Town are also popular tourist attractions in Austria.
