The oldest district is the Upper town, with buildings dating from the 13th to the 16th century. In this part of town you can still find parts of the original fortified town walls. The landmark of Bregenz is the Martin's Tower , with its late Roman origins and later mainly Baroque style architecture. The fresco in the chapel dates back to 1362. A further very impressive building is the gothic parish church of St. Gall, again with Romanesque foundations and a Baroque altar.
In terms of cuisine, the local speciality that should not be missed is fish from the lake.
The most important cultural event is the Bregenz Festival in the summer, with operas and plays, held on a stage build on the Bodensee itself.
