Eisenstadt is the capital of the federal province of Burgenland in Austria. Surrounded by sprawling vine yards it is the smallest federal capital city in Austria with a population of only 13,000 inhabitants.
The city is situated about 12 kilometres from the Hungarian border, on a plane leading to the River Wulka and on the southern slopes of the Leithagebirge mountain range.
Eisenstadt is characterized by a mild Pannonian climate; cold winters will minimal snow, hot, dry summers and a long, temperate Indian summer.
The name of the place literally means ‘Iron City’ and pertains to the illustrious history of iron mining and iron trade in the region. Archeological finds prove that the ancient city of Eisenstadt was home to the earliest civilizations, dating as far back as the eighth century.
