Austrian food is primarily the ‘meat and dumplings’ type with a compulsory serving of bread. Try the Tafelspitz (boiled beef with potatoes), Kletzennudeln (sweet noodles with pears and soft cheese), Powidl (specially prepared prune jam with a little alcohol) and the famous Apfelstrudel pastry.
Apart from classy wines and coffee, the national soft drink Almdudler (containing lemonade and herbs) and the Holler soft drink (made of elderberry blossoms) are also popular.
