The Salzburg Fortress is situated on the southern side of the Monchsberg Mountain and dates back to Roman time. Prince Archbishop Eberhard built this beautiful fortress in the period from 1060 to 1088. He built this castle on the Festungsberg in 1077. At the initial stage, there was a bailey with a wooden wall that served protection of the Imperial troops of the Holy Roman Empire.
